European Commission (Horizon Europe)
What it covers
Paid PhD positions: the EU funds a living allowance and a mobility allowance for each doctoral candidate, plus family, long-term leave or special-needs allowances where they apply, and research and training costs. Positions last up to 36 months (up to 48 for joint doctorates).
Who can apply
- Open to any nationality.
- You must not have a doctoral degree on the date you're recruited.
- You must not have lived or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the recruiting organisation's country for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment.
- You must enrol in a doctoral programme during the project.
- For industrial doctorates, you must spend at least 50% of your time outside academia.
- You must meet the requirements set out in the specific vacancy.
Good to know
Open to any nationality, as long as you don't already have a PhD. In general, you must not have lived, worked or studied mainly in the country of the hiring organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years before you start.
How to apply
Step 1: Search open positions
Use the EURAXESS list of MSCA Doctoral Network vacancies, which is updated daily, or vacancies that funded networks advertise elsewhere.
Step 2: Check the mobility rule
Before you apply, make sure you haven't lived, worked or studied mainly in the hiring organisation's country for more than 12 of the last 36 months.
Step 3: Read the full vacancy
Each EURAXESS advert gives the full requirements of the position. Check them, along with how and by when to apply.
Step 4: Apply to the recruiting organisation
Apply to the funded network's vacancy, following the instructions in the advert. The EU's Doctoral Network calls are for organisations, not for PhD candidates.
Step 5: Ask for help if needed
The MSCA National Contact Point in your future host country can explain the application process and participation rules.
When to apply
- Deadline
- There's no central deadline: each Doctoral Network position closes on the date given in its own vacancy notice.
There's no single deadline: each funded network advertises its own PhD vacancies (for example on EURAXESS) with its own closing date.
