GREAT Scholarships

British Council and the UK Government's GREAT Britain Campaign, with participating UK universities

Partial fundingMaster's

What it covers

At least £10,000 towards tuition fees for a one-year taught master's; some universities give more (the University of Bristol's 2026–27 awards were £13,000). It's a tuition contribution only, so you'll need other money for the rest of your fees and living costs.

Who can apply

  • Passport holder and permanent resident of Bangladesh, China (mainland only), Egypt, France, Ghana, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Spain, Thailand, Turkey or Vietnam
  • Undergraduate degree that gets you into a postgraduate course at a participating UK university
  • Applying for a one-year taught postgraduate course covered by that university's scholarship
  • Meet the university's English language and academic entry requirements
  • Work experience or a proven interest in your chosen subject
  • Willing to attend GREAT scholar events and act as an ambassador for the scheme

Good to know

Open to citizens of the 18 GREAT-eligible countries (the list is on the British Council page). Each participating UK university picks the eligible courses and runs its own selection. In 2026–27, over 140 scholarships were offered by more than 60 universities.

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Open your country's GREAT page

Find your country on the British Council GREAT Scholarships page to see which UK universities offer awards to students from it.

  2. Step 2: Check the university's eligible courses

Follow the link to each university's own page to see which courses the scholarship covers and how to apply.

  3. Step 3: Apply by the university's deadline

Apply using that university's instructions and form. Each university sets its own deadline; for 2026–27, for example, Bristol's was 10 April 2026 and Kent's was 24 April 2026.

  4. Step 4: Wait for the university's decision

Each university tells applicants the outcome itself. For 2026–27, universities were expected to award the scholarships by 30 June 2026.

  5. Step 5: Register to receive the funding

If you win, the university pays the scholarship once you've registered, and it can be used only towards tuition fees.

When to apply

Deadline
Each university sets its own deadline: for 2026–27 these included 10 April 2026 (Bristol) and 24 April 2026, 5pm BST (Kent), with awards due by 30 June 2026. The 2027–28 list hadn't been published as of 16 October 2026.

Each participating university sets its own deadline, so dates vary. In mid-October 2026 the British Council page still showed the 2026–27 list, so check for the 2027–28 list.
