Clarendon Fund (University of Oxford)

Fully fundedMaster'sPhD

What it covers

Course fees plus a grant for living costs, for the fee-paying length of your course. Over 200 new scholarships are awarded each year.

Who can apply

  • No restrictions on nationality, residence or subject
  • Applying for a new master's or DPhil course at Oxford
  • Must apply by your course's December or January deadline (March or later deadlines aren't considered)
  • Not eligible if you hold a deferred offer or are continuing the same degree
  • Selected on academic record (most scholars have a first-class degree or equivalent, such as a GPA of 3.7/4 or above), potential and motivation

Good to know

Open to all nationalities and subjects, for new full-time and part-time DPhil and master's students at Oxford. Selection is based on outstanding academic merit and potential, and it's very competitive.

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Choose a course and deadline

Find your course in Oxford's graduate course list and note its December or January deadline, shown on the course page.

  2. Step 2: Submit your Oxford application

Submit the graduate application with your supporting documents and three referees by 12:00 midday UK time on the deadline. There's no separate Clarendon form.

  3. Step 3: Let your department nominate you

Your department decides on your place and, in parallel, nominates its strongest applicants for Clarendon. Academic divisions shortlist nominees in February or March.

  4. Step 4: Watch for an offer by April

Successful candidates are emailed an offer letter, mostly by the end of April. If you haven't heard by mid-June, assume you haven't been selected.

  5. Step 5: Meet your offer conditions

Your funding is secure once you meet the conditions of your Oxford place. A funding breakdown letter follows later in the summer.

Documents you will need

  • Oxford graduate application form
  • Official transcript
  • CV or résumé
  • Personal statement or statement of purpose
  • Research proposal (if your course asks)
  • Written work (if your course asks)
  • Three references

Typical list; the official guidance for your round is final.

When to apply

Deadline
For 2027–28 entry, deadlines vary by course, for example 12:00 midday UK time on 2 December 2026 for the DPhil in Engineering Science and on 26 January 2027 for the MSc in Economics for Development.

There's no separate application: apply for your Oxford course by its December or January deadline (depending on the course) and you're considered automatically.
